Frequently Asked Questions

What does halal certification involve?

Halal certification ensures that a restaurant's food and practices comply with Islamic dietary laws. This includes the sourcing of ingredients, proper slaughtering methods for meat, and the avoidance of non-halal substances like alcohol or pork.

How do I apply for halal certification?

Normally you must contact an accredited halal certification body, but Something Halal offers an in-house certification process where you provide details about your menu and sourcing practices, and undergo an inspection. The process may also include staff training to ensure adherence to halal standards.

How long does it take to get halal certified?

The process can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks, depending on when your application is in queue, the complexity of your operation, and whether any adjustments need to be made to meet halal standards.

What are the costs of halal certification?

Usually the cost varies depending on the certification body and the size of the restaurant. Something Halal charges a $90 initial application fee and $50 annual renewal fees.

Can I serve both halal and non-halal items on the same menu?

Yes and No. For menu listed on Something Halal Platform, you can only serve Halal items. For your local restaurant, non-Halal food items are acceptable but must be marketed to your customer as such and a strict separation and procedures guidelines needs to be in place to prevent cross-contamination.

Do I need to change my suppliers to get halal certified?

Yes, if any of your current suppliers provide non-halal ingredients or products for "Halal" advertised menu items, you will need to switch to halal-certified suppliers to meet the certification requirements.

My supplier provided us their certificate, does that make us Halal certified?

No, a supplier will provide you their certificate to show authentication and business procedure of their products being Halal. That does not automatically make your business certified as many questions about your business activities are not answered. You will need to apply for a Halal Certification under your business name where your business is vetted for Halal management standards and upon approval only then your business is certified.

Do I have to renew my halal certification?

Yes, halal certification typically requires annual renewal, which involves a re-inspection and verification to ensure ongoing compliance with halal standards.
